Hi Colin,
well a concrete base is always the best and safest option in respects that it wont move over a period of time under any weather conditions!! so we would always advise this.
But if you are not going to do a concrete base then my advise would be to select your area carefully looking for water traps in the garden and tree roots etc...
- once selected the grass must be removed. so it wont grow underneath.
- Try to compact the area as much as possible to make it as solid as you can.But as doing it make sure the area is absolutely level!! as measured by a level or a transit. The base must be level or you can get all sorts of problems with the end product and building of the pool.
Once you have the structure up you have a couple options for the base...
One could be to add a 2" fine sand base, this will protect the liner from any damage from small stones and give a soft feel underneath.
Another would be to have the whole base covered with jabalite. it is basically a strong polystyrene. this would also protect the liner and feel softer.
with all of this i would highly recommend a 6" - 8" fine sand cove around the pool. This is to prevent the liner from creeping under the pool walls!!
But with both these options there is no guarentee with all the rain that it wont move!! and cause problems. This is why we advise the concrete.
Hope this has helped.
